Bobby Geroge spoke to MDA promotions this week

Not every darts player spends as much time in front of the mirror as Jocky Wilson.

For Bobby George, image is everything and understated the dirtiest of dirty words.

He wears sequinned shirts and capes, carries a candleabra and when he finally gets to the oche, pulls his darts across a handsome face tanned by hours working on building sites and a few more spent under a sun bed.

Ever the showman, George is convinced he can win ‘Judgement Night’ and “have a laugh doing it” and nobody who remembers the greatest of all darts comebacks will write off his chances of doing just that.

Beaten by Eric Bristow in the BDO world championship final in 1980, Bobby got there again 14 years later – despite breaking his back !

He suffered the injury when celebrating sinking a crucial double in his quarter-final win over Kevin Kenny. You can’t play darts,” a doctor told him afterwards. “You shouldn’t even be able to walk. You’ve broken your back.”

As Bobby knew, the show had to go on, so he got a corset made – “I couldn’t get one with sequins” he chuckled – and his semi final against Magnus Caris from Sweden went ahead.

At 4-2 down and with pain etched on his face in between throws, it looked all over George and after two legs of the seventh set, Caris was on the brink of the final.

He took aim at 141 for the match and after treble 20 and treble 15 flew in, George got ready to put his darts away.

Caris missed the double 18 for the match, though, and that was the turning point.

As the crowd screamed and gasped, Bobby forgot all about the pain and won the next nine legs to go through to the final. “I was in so much pain,” he said, “and I don’t know how I got through it.”

Sadly, whoever was writing Bobby’s script ran out of ink after that – he was beaten in the final by John Part before undergoing back surgery – but remains popular on the exhibition circuit and in his role as a pundit on BBC television.

“I’ve been playing darts for 34 years and still have fun playing the game,” said Bobby. “I can play really well some nights and really bad other nights.

“If I play well at ‘Judgement Night,’ I can beat all of them !”

All 8 players were fantastic to work with Merv Was there first practising of course took a bit of stick in his first match and was quite angry but like i said to him the people who are booing are the 1st there for an autograph, afer that he got a great reception and was a deserving winner All 9 players including Jamie Caven were a credit to darts and jamies wife was amazing helping with selling tickets big thanks to mrs C. The lighting was superb far improved from anything held there before one way media did a great job, the only blip was the spotting but in his defence he has only got one camera where as sky have 3/4 just on the board. if you have any photos send them to mward@mdapromotions.co.uk and we will get them up on the site asap
